It could take quite a few hours, depending on the type of car or door and your own practical ability! If there are electrics in the door (such as electric windows) then this process will take longer than for a normal non-electrical door.

How long does it take to replace a car door?
  • Firstly find a new door to replace the old one with.
  • If there are electrics in the door, then you will have have to pop out the various switches and remove the interior of the door. This should be a quick and simple job.
  • Once the electronics have been disconnected, use a spanner (wrench) to unbolt the door from the body of the car.
  • Most hinges have three or four bolts in them, so remember to keep these in a safe place!
  • Remove the interior of the new door, and connect all of the electronics. This is easier to do before the door is attached to the car.
  • Once this has been completed, you can bolt the new door back onto its hinges.
  • Do not tighten all the bolts completely until all of them are in place.
  • When this has been done, try opening and closing the door a few times. If it's not shutting or latching, you'll probably have to adjust some of the bolts on the hinges to compensate for this.
If you do not feel confident performing this procedure at home, then take your vehicle into a garage to get the door replaced by a mechanic.
