For most people, the trip to America was not a happy ride; if you were very poor, you would ride in steerage. Steerage is at the bottom of the boat, and considered the worst. In steerage, the beds were cramped, their were vermin in your bed, and it smelled awful. For the wealthy immigrants on the first or second floor, your beds had plenty of space, and you were served food in a dinning room.
