The first thing to do, if you have a transmission problem, is to always check the tranny fluid level, but since the ATF line pressure is highest in reverse, low fluid is not likely the problem Even if it moves forward, it may be starting in a higher gear.You need to determine if you have (low gear). There is a roller clutch in your tranny that works only in low and reverse.
If you don't have either one, then it is definately an overhaul situation.
You could get lucky, if you did not re-install the shifter cable in the right position. Just because the shift indicator in your dash indicates that it is in reverse, doesn't mean that it really is.
