You should do that if you DO NOT have anti-lock brakes and trying to control a lock up as ABS technically should do the 'pumping' for you if you skid. If fitted and the skid continues you could try it as there's no harm in trying. Try to use engine breaking to best effect, especially in a manual car.
If you are skidding frequently, you may be braking too hard. Don't press the brake pedal so hard.
It could also be faulty brakes, get them checked, most garages will perform a free brake inspection.
