There are many debates among people around the world that can literally be argued forever and a day without any conclusion and the advantages and disadvantages of cars is certainly one of them. We reside in a time when there are currently more cars on the roads than ever before so clearly there are certainly a number of advantages. Having your own car provides you with a great deal of freedom. You can pretty much travel wherever you want whenever you want within your local area, without having to worry about the departure times and delays of the public transport system. If you have just the one car between you and your family, it can be possible to share the vehicle between all of the family members thus providing everyone with a mode of transport at all times. Also, having a car allows you to literally drive from door to door wherever you are traveling to without having to adhere to public transport routes that may well not take you close enough to your final destination. Clearly there are a number of advantages to owning your own car but there are also plenty of disadvantages too. The price of petrol and diesel is higher than it ever has been so it can be rather expensive to travel by car, especially if you have a car with a large engine. You need to pay road tax and insurance for your car, both of which are more expensive than ever before. Basically it is extremely expensive to own and run a car in a time of high commodity prices so it is a high price to pay for the convenience of having one.

There are many disadvantages of owning a vehicle:

• Vehicles are expensive; a brand new vehicle will cost a sizeable chunk of a person's income.
• Oil prices are headed northwards; this makes it expensive to maintain a vehicle.
• Vehicles add to the pollution levels. Smoke let out from the exhaust pipes of cars all over the world contributes in raising the temperature everywhere. The resultant pollution levels have an adverse impact on the health of an individual.
• Everyday thousands of new vehicles hit the roads; the infrastructure in most countries is not geared to handle these kinds of volumes. Traffic jams are common; this brings down efficiency and productivity levels.
• The greater the number of vehicles, the greater the chances are of an accident occurring.
• There is a possibility that your vehicle could be stolen.
• Vehicles contribute to the existing social inequality. If everyone traveled by public transport then social inequality would not be as stark as it is today.

I personally don't think that there are many disadvantages except its effect on the environment and one's finances! If you can afford a car, then the convenience and comfort of having a status symbol that can bring you places is truly incomparable! Why wouldn't someone want a car?
