Firstly, do not run the engine if the radiator is full and hasn't got its cap on. The coolant will expand and spill over the engine.
Drain some coolant out, until the level is below the thermostat.
Then remove the upper radiator hose connection.
Remove the gasket from the thermostat housing.
Check the thermostat is the correct way up, then install the new gasket into the block.
Put the thermostat housing back on and run the engine.
When the engine is up to temperature, open the thermostat - you should see coolant circulating in the radiator.
If this is the case, then you have successfully installed a new thermostat!
